How it works
A single strip runs along the center seam where the flaps meet, with a few inches of overhang down each end panel. The H-tape pattern adds a strip across each edge seam, which is recommended for heavier boxes and by several carriers.
The calculator counts tape for both the top and the bottom. The standard overhang is 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm). Use 48 mm (2 in) wide tape for most boxes and 72 mm (3 in) for heavy or double-wall cartons. Never use masking tape, duct tape or string: they don't seal properly and carriers may refuse them.
Results are estimates based on typical industry values. Confirm final specifications with your supplier or carrier.

How much tape does a box need?
For a 16 × 12 × 12 inch box with a single strip and 2.5 in overhang, about 7 feet for top and bottom. H-taping roughly triples that.
What is the H-tape method?
Taping the center seam plus both edge seams on top and bottom, forming an H shape. It seals all openings and adds strength.
