Wooden crate size calculator

Estimate inside and outside dimensions for a wooden shipping crate.

Units

How it works

Crates are built from plywood panels framed with cleats (typically 1 × 4 lumber, about ¾ in thick) and set on skids so a forklift can lift them. Each layer adds to the outside size: clearance around the product, then the panel, then the cleat, and at the bottom the skids.

The calculator assumes ¾ in cleats and 3½ in skids (a 4 × 4). Freight is priced by density and class, so once you know the outside size and total weight, run the freight class calculator. International shipments need ISPM 15 heat-treated or plywood materials.

Results are estimates based on typical industry values. Confirm final specifications with your supplier or carrier.

Frequently asked questions

How much clearance should a crate have?

About 1 inch around the product if it's blocked and braced; more if you're adding foam or cushioning.

Do wooden crates need to be heat treated?

For international shipping, solid wood packaging must meet ISPM 15 (heat treated and stamped). Plywood is exempt.
